7 Yoga Meditation Practices to Do Every Day for a More Mindful Life
Do the Stimulating Breath
The stimulating breath is an energizing breathing exercise that can help you feel more awake and alert, especially if you're feeling tired or sluggish. To do the stimulating breath:
Inhale through your nose for a count of four. Pause at the top of your inhale for one second before exhaling quickly through pursed lips (like you're blowing out a candle) for a count of six. Repeat this cycle four times.
Do the Sun Salutation
The sun salutation is a sequence of 12 poses that gently warm your body and stretch your muscles. It's perfect for beginners, and you can do it pretty much anywhere. Check out our article on the importance of sun salutations and how to do the poses.
Counting the Breath
This is another great meditation practice for beginners. Simply count each inhale and exhale, starting at one and working your way up to ten. When you reach ten, start again at one. If you lose count, just begin again at one.
Do the 4-7-8 Exercise (Relaxing Breathing)
The four-seven-eight exercise is a super-simple breathing technique that can help you relax and fall asleep. To do it:
Close your eyes and inhale through your nose for four seconds. Hold your breath for seven seconds. Exhale through your mouth for eight seconds. Repeat this cycle three times.
Do a Guided Meditation
Guided meditations can be a great way to relax and focus your mind. There are lots of different types of guided meditations, so find one that you like and give it a try. You can find some good ones on YouTube or the relaxation section of our website.
Do Yoga Nidra
Yoga Nidra is a deep relaxation technique that can help you release stress and tension from your body. To do yoga Nidra:
Lie down on your back, with your arms and legs slightly apart. Close your eyes and focus on your breath. As you inhale, say to yourself "I am relaxed." As you exhale, say to yourself "I am at peace." Repeat this cycle for as long as you like.
Do a Mantra Meditation
Mantra meditations are a great way to focus your mind and achieve inner peace. To do a mantra meditation:
Select a mantra that speaks to you. It could be a word, phrase, or sentence. Sit in a comfortable position with your eyes closed and begin chanting the mantra aloud. Chant it as many times as you like, for as long as you like.
You can also chant it silently to yourself if that's more comfortable for you. If distracting thoughts come into your mind, just bring your focus back to the mantra.
These are just some of the many yoga and meditation techniques that you can use to achieve inner peace and perspective. Find the ones that work best for you, and remember: practice makes perfect.
